ECN will participate to re,publica, Berlin, one of Germany’s leading conference on the future of digital society. On the 8th of May 2019 with ECN’s Senior Research Analyst Conny Weber discuss an outline for global crowdfunding for creative professionals. The discussion is held under the guidance of GIZ and the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development.
Emergent artists and creative professionals in the global south face many challenges in their young career. One of the major obstacles to musicians, fashion designers or games developers from Africa and the Middle East are the above-average costs for pursuing their career (e.g. financing technology, travel, transport and connectivity) paired with a lack of funds to pay for them. Predominantly located in informal economies, creative professionals have next to no access to grants. One possible remedy could be crowd funding. A globally accessible crowd funding system that would serve the needs of emergent creative professionals and the donors alike would constitute a structural improvement of the creative sector. To this end, the Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) has initiated in 2018 the Global Project Culture and Creative Industries. In the spirit of the project’s main objective – to foster support models for the cultural and creative industries in Jordan, Kenya, Lebanon, Senegal and South Africa – today’s panel shall offer some insights on the pros and cons of accelerating the creative sector through crowd funding. The panelists will debate the necessary legal and monetary framework for creative professionals and reflect on aspects such as accessibility (leave no one behind), liability and suitable funding models. Join the debate – one of the panel chairs will be open to self-appointed speakers from the audience.
